Editorial Assignment
I am still having trouble coming up with an interesting topic to write my editorial on. Nothing that I am thinking of right now really strikes me. I had thought of writing an editorial about a group in Greensboro hoping to place homeless people in shelters in 10 years, but I am somewhat uncomfortable going up to a homeless person and doing an interview.

Emily, I have been in touch with a homeless man, Terry, during the last few months. He has been my guest at Civitan twice. At our last meeting, I also invited Michele Forrest, an advocate for the homeless. Take a look at her web site www.ChosenFast.com. She also brought Marsha,a young homeless woman. The meeting was very enlightening. Marsha lives in her car most of the time. I would like to see you do a story on her. Michele can get in touch with her.
ReplyDeleteMichele will be at our meeting on February 24th. She said she will bring Marsha. Rev. Frank Dew will be our guest speaker. He is pastor of New Creation Community Presbyterian Church at 501 S Mendenhall St (might be in your backyard if you are a student at UNC-G or Greensboro College). He also serves with Greensboro Urban Ministry. Because of your interest in the homeless, it would please me to be my guest at our meeting. We meet at Tex & Shirley's Restaurant in Friendly Shopping Center at 6pm. Email me at johneiko@earthlink.net and I will give you my phone number.
Jeri Rowe (News & Record) is likely to come. He wants to do a story on Terry. Michele and I are supposed to get together with him.
Take a look at our Civitan web site www.civitan.net/gatecity-gso and you will see a picture of Terry and Michele. I also suggest you look at an old post on Michele's blog, "The 7 stages of crack cocaine." Your can find by clicking on one of the recent comments. There are many heartbreaking comments. I think the whole post should be printed and put in the hands of anyone who might tempted to experiment.
(I am just starting to put up a blog, but there is nothing there yet.)
