Thoughts from opinion writing class this week...

Thursday in class we had to write a review of an episode of The Office and I found that really hard to write. I guess to begin with I am not really sure on how to begin a review and then go from there. I tried watching The Office and didn't like it at all. And with this episode of The Office that we had to watch in class for the review, I found it really hard to back up my opinion with scenes or quotes from the movie that showed how I just didn't like the show and thought it was such stupid humor. I think that the movie review we have to write for class will be the struggle point for me.

  1. Emily,
reviews, like columns and editorials revolve around opinion. So you have to start out with a strong opinion and then work on developing a persuasive piece to convince readers of your point of view. That is why opinion writing is not for everyone; you have to be strongly opinionated to be able to write persuasively.
I think reviews are one of the easier opinion pieces, because you're basically responding to something you've seen. Just tell your audience what you liked/disliked about the movie, show, etc. And back it up with specific examples, like a funny scene or a scene that was not so funny and didn't work for you.
